Register a .edu.ng domain with us: requirements and letter template

We help eligible educational institutions prepare a .edu.ng registration application with the right supporting documents. This guide explains what to send us, how to prepare the authorisation letter on your institution's own letterhead, and what happens before the domain can be activated.

The letter template is included below. It is a sample prepared by us for our customers, not a NiRA-issued form or a guarantee of approval. Replace every bracketed field with accurate institutional details and obtain a genuine authorised signature.

01 Check that .edu.ng is appropriate for your institution

NiRA reserves .edu.ng for qualifying approved and accredited tertiary institutions. Its published policy refers to relevant authorities such as NUC, NBTE and NCCE and also sets out degree-awarding and institutional approval requirements. Send us the evidence for your particular institution so eligibility can be checked against the registry's requirements. A business registration certificate alone does not establish educational accreditation.

Primary schools, secondary schools and other non-degree institutions should review our .sch.ng application guide instead. A training company must not claim tertiary status simply to obtain a preferred extension. The requested domain should represent the institution's name or an appropriate variant. Departments normally use subdomains under the institution's domain rather than applying as separate institutions.

02 Prepare the document pack

Item What to prepare
Institution details Legal name, institution type, official address and proposed domain
Approval evidence Readable provisional/full approval or accreditation evidence relevant to the institution and issuing authority
Authorisation letter Institutional letterhead, intended domain, authorised staff contact and genuine signatory details
Contact information Names, designations, telephone numbers and existing reachable email addresses
Hosting preparation The actual nameserver hostnames for the intended DNS service, confirmed before use

The approval evidence and eligibility rules come from the registry policy. The document organisation and sample letter here are our practical preparation guidance. We may ask you to clarify an institution name, document reference or authorisation before the application is forwarded.

03 Copy this .edu.ng authorisation-letter template

Place the following wording on your institution's genuine letterhead. Do not copy NiRA branding or invent an accreditation reference. The suggested addressee and address are provided for preparation; confirm any application-specific delivery instructions with our team before submission.

[PRINT ON YOUR INSTITUTION'S GENUINE OFFICIAL LETTERHEAD]
[Institution's legal name]

04 Complete and check the letter

  1. Use the institution's legal name consistently in the letter and supporting evidence. Explain any approved abbreviation used in the domain.
  2. Use an existing email address that the named officer can already receive. An address at the requested domain may not work before registration and DNS setup.
  3. Identify the authorised institutional staff member clearly. If a consultant provides technical help, state that relationship without presenting the consultant as the institution's owner.
  4. Confirm the actual nameservers with us or your chosen DNS provider. Do not submit example hostnames from another customer's guide.
  5. Have the appropriate institutional signatory review and sign the complete letter. Scan all relevant pages clearly, including letterhead and signature.

Keep a local copy of the signed letter and supporting evidence. Do not alter a signed scan to change a domain or officer after approval; prepare a corrected letter and have it authorised again.

05 Send the application to our team

Use your authenticated support ticket and identify the proposed domain and order or service reference where available. Follow our document-submission instructions in that case. If you are still deciding which service to order, contact us through our Nigeria website before making assumptions about eligibility or approval time.

We help check the preparation and guide the submission, but the registry's verification determines whether registration can proceed. Payment or an available search result does not replace that review. Keep the contacts reachable and respond to requests for corrections in the same case.

06 After approval: connect the website and email

Confirm that the approved domain is registered for the correct institution. Then complete the intended DNS, hosting and email configuration. Registration does not create mailboxes, publish a website or install every required certificate automatically. Use our institutional website and email launch checklist to verify the complete result.

07 Questions we receive

Can an agent or web designer apply for us?

An authorised person can help prepare and coordinate the application, but the institution's identity, approval evidence and authorisation must be genuine. Keep control with the institution and document the technical consultant's role.

Is the sample letter itself proof of eligibility?

No. It records an application and authority to act. The supporting institutional approval still needs to meet the registry's requirements.

What if our application is returned for clarification?

Send us the requested correction, preserve the earlier correspondence and avoid creating conflicting applications. Our returned-application guide explains how to prepare a clear resubmission.
