Create a folder to organise website assets or a file for a specific application task. An empty file or directory is only a filesystem object; it does not create a working application, database or DNS record.

Check access and requirements
Confirm the domain’s document root and the purpose of the new item. Use simple, predictable names and remember that Linux filenames are case-sensitive. Avoid placing backups, exported databases or credentials in a publicly accessible folder.
01 Create files and folders in cPanel File Manager
- Open File Manager and navigate to the intended parent directory. Check the full path shown before creating anything.
- Select + Folder for a directory or + File for a file. Enter the name and confirm the destination in the creation dialog.
- Create the item, refresh the listing and verify that its name and extension are correct. A file called
index.html.txtis different fromindex.html. - If you created a text file, select it and use Edit to add its intended content. Save a small valid example first when testing a new path.
- Use the permissions required by the application and hosting environment. Do not make a directory or file writable by everyone as a default setting.
02 Example: create a harmless HTML file to verify the path
For a public test, create a new file named nabtech-file-check.html in the intended document root, after confirming that this name does not already belong to your application. Open Edit and save the following content.
<!doctype html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>File location test</title>
</head>
<body>
<p>The test file is being served from the intended website.</p>
</body>
</html>
Open the corresponding URL on your domain and confirm the sentence appears. This checks a simple public file path, not PHP, database access or the rest of the application. Delete the test file when you finish.
Confirm the expected result
For a public test file, visit its exact URL and confirm the expected response. For a private directory, verify through File Manager without making the contents publicly browsable.
What should I check if File Manager cannot create the item?
If creation fails, check account space, ownership and the parent path. If an item already exists, inspect it before choosing another name or overwriting it. Remove temporary tests once they have served their purpose, especially diagnostic files that expose server details.
