bbPress is a WordPress plugin that adds discussion forums. This guide helps you check hosting compatibility, choose an appropriate installation method and verify the first usable site. The application, its extensions and any commercial license remain separate from the hosting account.

01 Choose the existing-site or new-site route
To add forums to a working WordPress website, install the bbPress plugin in that installation. You do not need a second WordPress site. If you want a separate forum site, provision a clean supported WordPress installation in its own approved location first, then add bbPress there.
Back up the current database, plugins, theme and uploads. Check the selected bbPress release against the WordPress, PHP and membership components used by the site. Test in a restricted copy when the site already has customers or a complex login workflow.
02 Install bbPress on an existing WordPress site
- Sign in to the correct WordPress dashboard using an authorised administrator account.
- Open Plugins > Add New, search for the official bbPress plugin and review its current details.
- Select Install Now, then activate the plugin after installation completes.
- Review the forum settings and create the first forum with its intended visibility and status. Choose a clear public forum address and ensure it does not conflict with an existing page.
- Review forum roles, registration and moderation alongside the existing WordPress account model. Give moderators only the capabilities they need.
- Add a clear navigation route to the forum and check the active theme displays topics, replies and account controls correctly.
03 Worked example: prove a member can use the forum
Create a temporary public forum called Product questions and a harmless topic. Use a normal test member in a separate browser session to post a reply. Confirm the intended moderator can review the topic and that a guest sees only the content you chose to publish.
If you create a private forum, test a direct topic URL while signed out and while signed in as an ordinary member. A hidden menu item alone does not prove its content is protected. Verify notifications and the site's account recovery workflow before inviting customers.
04 Check the existing website after activation
Test the homepage, login, account pages and any store or membership features as well as the forum. Check HTTPS, page caching and a normal member's session. Preserve uploaded content and the database separately from plugin files when planning an update or rollback.
Why do forum links or permissions behave unexpectedly?
Check the configured forum address, WordPress permalink handling, forum role and the user's effective permissions. Review theme and membership-plugin compatibility in the test copy. Do not create another installer deployment over the live directory or reinstall the database to investigate a routing or permission error.
Do I need Softaculous to add bbPress?
No. The plugin workflow is appropriate for an existing WordPress installation. Softaculous can be relevant when creating a genuinely separate new WordPress site on an eligible hosting service, but it is not a prerequisite for adding forums to the site you already have.
