Removing a domain alias in DirectAdmin

control-panels, domains-dns

Removing an alias stops the current account from serving the same website under that additional name. It should leave the main website intact, but you must also consider DNS, certificates and application references to the retired hostname.

Prepare for the change

Identify the exact alias and confirm it is not the main domain or a separately hosted site. Decide whether it is being retired, redirected or moved. Record its existing settings and prepare the replacement destination where needed.

01 Remove a domain alias in DirectAdmin

  1. Select the main website domain and open Account Manager > Domain Pointers.
  2. Locate the alias entry and check its type. Select only the additional domain you intend to remove.
  3. Choose Delete and review the confirmation. Do not select unrelated pointers or the main site.
  4. Review public DNS separately and change it to the approved destination. A still-active address record can send visitors to a server that no longer recognizes the alias.
  5. Remove obsolete application references, allowed-host entries or certificate names only after verifying they are no longer needed. If the old name should forward to the main site, create an intentional redirect arrangement with valid HTTPS coverage.

How do I check the site after removing an alias?

Confirm the alias has disappeared from the panel and that the main site, login and assets still work. Test the retired hostname from a fresh client to confirm its intended new behavior.

If the change does not work

If the main site is unexpectedly affected, review whether the correct entry and domain context were selected. Recreate the recorded alias if it was removed by mistake. Cached redirects and DNS can delay what a browser shows, so distinguish a cached result from the current server configuration before making further changes.
