Plus addressing adds a label after a mailbox name, such as [email protected], while delivering through the underlying [email protected] account. It is useful for organising subscriptions and incoming enquiries without creating a separate mailbox for each label.

What you need before you begin
Use an existing mailbox and confirm the application accepting your address allows a plus character. The label is visible to senders and is not a secret or independent authentication identity.
01 Use plus addressing to organise incoming cPanel email
- Open Email Accounts > Manage for the base mailbox. Locate the plus-addressing folder setting.
- Choose whether the server should automatically create folders for new plus labels. Save the intended behaviour.
- Send a test message to an address such as
[email protected]from an external mailbox. - Open Webmail and inspect the matching folder. When automatic folder creation is disabled, a message without an existing matching destination can appear in Inbox.
- Subscribe your mail client to any newly created IMAP folders and repeat the test using a second label. Document which labelled address belongs to each workflow.
Confirm the expected result
The message should reach the base mailbox and appear in the expected location. Sign in using the real mailbox credentials, not a new password for the plus-labelled address.
Troubleshoot unexpected results
If a form rejects the plus sign, use an ordinary forwarder or dedicated mailbox instead. If messages disappear from the expected folder, check mailbox filters and folder subscriptions. Enabling automatic creation can produce many folders if arbitrary labels receive mail.
Does this provide separate staff access?
No. All labels use the same underlying mailbox. Create independent accounts when people require different passwords, permissions, storage allocation or an auditable offboarding process.
