Understanding allocated resources and overselling limits in WHM

A reseller can reach a resource-allocation limit even when their customers have not filled their quotas. WHM distinguishes assigned capacity from actual consumption according to the provider’s overselling configuration.

Information to have ready

Review the reseller’s allowed account count, disk and bandwidth totals, permitted packages and actual current usage. Only an administrator with appropriate privileges should change reseller limits.

01 Review resource allocation and reseller limits

  1. Use View Reseller Usage and Manage Account Status to list the reseller’s accounts, packages and usage.
  2. Compare the sum of assigned quotas with actual usage. If overselling is disabled, allocated package quotas can exhaust the reseller allowance before customers use all of that space.
  3. For an authorised server administrator, open Edit Reseller Nameservers and Privileges for that reseller and inspect resource and account-creation limits.
  4. Choose a capacity policy that matches the purchased service and operational headroom. Do not grant unlimited packages or broad super privileges merely to bypass a limit.
  5. Save any approved change and test the intended account creation or package assignment with a controlled account. Continue monitoring aggregate real consumption.

Confirm the expected result

The reseller should be able to manage accounts within the agreed policy, with a clear explanation of whether limits consider allocations or usage. Keep every affected account assigned to an appropriate package.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

If an account cannot be created, inspect account-count limits and permitted-package limits as well as storage. Some elevated privileges can bypass ordinary controls; audit ACLs when the observed behaviour does not match the configured policy.

Does overselling create extra disk space?

No. It changes how allocations are evaluated. Physical storage, service capacity and each customer’s actual usage still need monitoring and sufficient headroom.
