Use RDAP to check a domain's current public registration data, including its sponsoring registrar, published dates, status and nameservers. RDAP became the definitive source for generic top-level domain registration data on 28 January 2025 as the previous WHOIS service requirement was retired.

01 Look up the exact domain
- Open ICANN Lookup directly. Enter the registered domain, such as
example.com, without a website path or email address. - Confirm the result matches the spelling and extension you intended. For an internationalised name, record its ASCII form as well.
- Read the registrar and domain status. Use these to identify which provider can explain a registration restriction.
- Review the events and dates with their labels. Registration, last change and expiration are different events.
- Save the lookup time and relevant non-secret fields in your support notes. A screenshot should retain the domain and labels, not only an isolated date.
02 Understand what a result can tell you
Public data is useful for checking which registrar holds a domain and whether an action is pending or prohibited. It may show registry-level dates that differ from a reseller's invoice due date. Compare any discrepancy with the authenticated account and the completed registrar operation.
For a country-code extension, use the registry's official lookup when it is not supported by the tool or exposes a different public format. Do not assume every extension follows the same publication rules or lifecycle.
Does an empty lookup mean the domain is available?
No. A missing response can result from service failure, unsupported coverage, redaction or a name outside that lookup's scope. An unregistered label can also be reserved or restricted. Check availability through the actual ordering service and review its eligibility and price response.
RDAP does not expose the contents of your DNS zone, mailbox or website. Nameservers listed in registration data are a starting point for DNS diagnosis, but direct authoritative queries are needed to confirm what they serve. Public registrant details may also be hidden without invalidating the registration.
