Read EPP domain status codes before attempting a change

domains-dns

Read the exact domain status before trying to renew, transfer or change nameservers. A lock, a pending operation and a DNS hold have different effects. Several status codes can apply to the same domain at the same time.

01 Interpret the operational effect

Status family What to investigate
clientTransferProhibited A registrar-side transfer restriction. It does not normally stop the existing website from resolving.
serverTransferProhibited A registry-side transfer restriction that needs the registrar's explanation.
clientHold or serverHold The registration is prevented from normal DNS publication.
pendingTransfer A registrar transfer is in progress. Check that operation before creating another.
redemptionPeriod A deleted domain may require restoration through its current registrar.
pendingDelete Interpret with the other statuses. After redemption has ended, ordinary renewal or restoration may no longer be possible.

02 Use the status to choose the next action

  1. Collect the full current status list from an authoritative lookup or registrar response.
  2. Compare it with the action you attempted. Record the request time, operation or job reference and exact error.
  3. For a transfer lock, check whether it is a user-controlled lock, a timed policy restriction or a registry restriction.
  4. For a hold, ask which condition must be resolved. Fix the verified cause before changing unrelated DNS records.
  5. After the provider confirms completion, check the registration status again and test any affected public service separately.

Why can a domain say active while my website is down?

Registration status does not test the website application, its TLS certificate or every DNS record. A registered domain can point to the wrong server, contain an invalid DNSSEC chain or reach a failed hosting service. Conversely, a browser cache can temporarily show an old page even while the registration is on hold.

Do not remove every lock as a troubleshooting shortcut. Keep protective controls in place unless the planned operation requires an authorised change. If the status is unexpected, provide the complete evidence to support rather than repeatedly submitting the same request.
