BoxTrapper is a challenge-response mail filter available on some cPanel services. It can hold messages from unknown senders until they verify themselves. That extra step can also interrupt legitimate automated messages, so evaluate it carefully for the mailbox’s purpose.

What you need before you begin
Check whether the mailbox receives orders, password resets, ticket notifications or other automated mail. Those senders may not answer a challenge. Keep ordinary spam filtering configured and decide who will review held messages and maintain the allowlist.
01 Use BoxTrapper without losing legitimate email
- Open BoxTrapper in cPanel and select Manage beside the exact mailbox. Review its current status and configuration.
- Before enabling it, add trusted senders or rules using the supported whitelist controls and review the verification message. Do not publish private details in that message.
- Enable BoxTrapper for the selected mailbox, then monitor its queue and logs. Release legitimate held mail and adjust the allowlist as necessary.
- Test with an external human sender and with an automated service that the mailbox relies on. Confirm both the challenge behaviour and delivery of essential messages.
- Disable it again if the workflow causes missed business mail, and review queued messages before abandoning the feature.
Confirm the expected result
A useful result is reduced unwanted mail while expected messages continue to arrive. Do not judge success solely by a quieter inbox.
What should I check when BoxTrapper appears to lose legitimate mail?
If senders report missing mail, inspect the queue and filtering logs before changing DNS. If the feature is absent, it may not be enabled for the service. Avoid applying challenge-response filtering to a critical transactional mailbox without testing its real senders.
