Adjusting Cloudflare Challenge Passage

Challenge Passage controls how long a visitor who successfully completes an eligible Cloudflare challenge can avoid repeating that challenge. It uses a clearance cookie and is separate from your application’s login session or shopping-cart expiry.

01 What you need before you begin

Confirm repeated prompts come from Cloudflare challenges rather than the website’s own authentication. Review the affected rule and browser behaviour. A longer clearance period changes challenge frequency but does not correct an overbroad security rule.

02 Adjust Cloudflare Challenge Passage

  1. Open the Cloudflare zone’s Security Settings and locate Challenge passage.
  2. Use the edit control to select a duration appropriate to the site and its risk. Review the current vendor guidance rather than copying an old fixed value without context.
  3. Save and test with a browser session that encounters the relevant challenge. Complete it, then visit another affected page within the selected period.
  4. Check that the browser can retain the cf_clearance cookie and is not repeatedly clearing site data.
  5. Monitor legitimate user reports and security events after the change. Adjust the underlying rule when customers are being challenged unnecessarily.

03 Confirm the expected result

A successful eligible challenge should reduce repeated prompts during its valid passage period. Test normal navigation and any browser-based application requests that were affected.

04 Example: test a challenge setting against a real customer journey

Use a signed-out browser to test the page that previously challenged legitimate visitors. Complete the challenge when offered, then navigate through the next useful actions on the website. A change should improve the intended journey without broadly bypassing protection.

Do not treat browser challenge settings as an authentication system for private content. Application logins and permissions still control who can access customer accounts, orders and administrative functions.

Why can a visitor be challenged again?

Check the current rule, browser state and request route. Private browsing, blocked cookies or another security rule may affect the experience. Record the actual event and Ray ID rather than assuming a single duration setting controls every challenge.

Machine-to-machine traffic such as payment notifications should be reviewed separately from browser journeys. An integration may not be able to complete an interactive page even when a person can. Keep any exception narrow and test the callback through its supported verification process. If you need help distinguishing a Cloudflare response from our server's response, provide the hostname, path and time, without cookies or authorisation tokens.

Why do repeated challenges continue after I increase Challenge Passage?

Challenge Passage does not apply to rate-limiting rules, so increasing it will not solve every repeated block. Cookie restrictions, changing browser conditions or a different challenge requirement can also affect results. Do not tell users to disable all browser privacy protection as the default solution.
