Installing and maintaining website applications with Softaculous

Our Web Hosting offering includes access to application installation tools such as Softaculous where enabled for the service. These tools simplify setting up supported website software, including content management systems, shops, forums and other applications in the available catalogue. The Account Manager's application controls can also present supported installation and maintenance actions, helping you work without manually performing every setup step.

01 Prepare the destination and install the application

  1. Choose the correct domain, confirm HTTPS is ready, and decide whether the application belongs at the main address or in a subdirectory.
  2. Check the target folder for an existing website. Installing into a location that already contains another application can create conflicts or overwrite important files.
  3. Use a unique administrator password and an email address you control, and review the software's requirements and licence before proceeding.

After installation, open the public website and administrator area, complete the application's own setup and test the functions you need. Keep a record of the application and its version. An installer makes deployment easier, but your website can still require configuration, content, payment-provider setup and compatible themes or extensions before it is ready for customers.

02 Maintain the installation and review removal options

For maintenance, review updates, create an appropriate backup and test significant changes before applying them to a busy live site. Available backup, upgrade, clone or restore actions vary by application and enabled tools. Third-party premium themes, extensions or subscriptions are not automatically licensed simply because the base application is installable. Removing an installation can also remove its files or database, so examine the deletion options carefully. Installing WordPress on general Web Hosting does not by itself convert the package into NabWP Managed WordPress; NabWP is our separate WordPress-focused hosting product.

Does an installer listing prove an application is maintained and suitable?

No. An installer listing confirms availability in that catalogue, not that every listed application is a suitable choice for a new website. Check the project's maintained releases, requirements and licensing before installing it.

  1. Confirm the application is available in the server's enabled catalogue and that its current maintained release suits the hosting environment.
  2. Choose the exact domain, HTTPS address and installation directory, checking that the location does not contain another site.
  3. Complete the application's own setup after installation and test its administrator and customer functions.

Catalogue presence does not by itself prove that an old application remains maintained or safe for a new project. Check the project's current requirements, updates and migration options. Paid extensions and services retain their own licences even when the base application can be installed through Softaculous.
