Extracting a website archive safely in cPanel

Extracting a website archive expands its files into a server directory. Preview the archive’s structure and use an empty staging folder first so nested folders, unexpected paths or existing filenames do not overwrite the live site unintentionally.

What you need before you begin

Use an archive from a trusted source and keep a current website backup. Confirm available space for both the compressed file and expanded content. Some formats require server tools or features that may not be enabled.

01 Extract a website archive safely in cPanel

  1. Upload the archive into a nonpublic working directory where practical, then open File Manager and select it.
  2. Choose Extract and specify an empty permitted destination. Check the full extraction path before confirming.
  3. Inspect the extraction result and directory structure. Some packages contain a top-level folder, while others place index and asset files directly in the destination.
  4. Review configuration files and the application’s install instructions before copying a prepared release into its document root. Do not overwrite the live database configuration with a sample file.
  5. After deployment and verification, remove the temporary archive and extraction folder if they are no longer needed. Keep a separate recovery copy securely.

Confirm the expected result

Confirm expected files, hidden configuration and the correct directory level. Test representative pages and inspect the failed-extraction details if any files are missing.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

If extraction fails, check format support, upload completeness, permissions and capacity. Repeated extraction into the same mixed directory can hide what changed; start with a clean working folder after preserving anything needed.

Why is an extra folder visible in my URL?

The archive may contain its own parent directory. Verify the intended document root and package layout before moving files. Do not change every application URL merely to compensate for extracting at the wrong directory level.
