Selecting files for a WHM file restoration

File and Directory Restoration can recover selected items from supported local account backups. It is useful for a deleted file or damaged folder when a full-account rollback would unnecessarily affect newer data.

What you need before you begin

Identify the exact account, path and desired backup date. Preserve the current file or directory first because restoration can overwrite an existing item. Check whether code and database versions must remain compatible.

01 Select files for a WHM file restoration

  1. Open File and Directory Restoration in WHM, select the cPanel account and choose View Backups.
  2. Browse to the item or enter its direct supported path. Confirm that it belongs to the intended domain rather than another site in the same account.
  3. Select the required available backup date and inspect the restore choice. Restore the smallest scope that solves the problem.
  4. Run the restore and read its completion result. Compare the recovered file’s contents, ownership and permissions with the intended version.
  5. Test the affected application function and a normal page. Remove any temporary public diagnostic file created during verification.

Check the backup or recovered data

The selected file or directory should be recovered while unrelated live data remains unchanged. Keep the preservation copy until the application owner confirms the result.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

The feature depends on local backups and required metadata; remote-only backup storage may need an authorised retrieval step. This interface does not restore the account’s mail or .cpanel directories. Use the appropriate full or mail-specific recovery workflow for those.

Will restoring a code folder also restore its database?

No. Files and database contents are different components. If a code version requires an older schema, plan a coordinated recovery instead of creating an incompatible combination.
