Fixing Laravel log and cache write permissions

development, performance

Laravel needs to write selected runtime files, including logs, compiled views and cached configuration. A permission error should be resolved for those paths and the actual process account.

Gather the details you will need

Read the full error path from the private log or PHP error output. Determine which user runs web PHP, scheduled tasks and queue workers, because they may not share the same ownership.

01 Fix Laravel log and cache write permissions

  1. Confirm the failing path belongs to the active release and that the account has free disk space and available inodes. A full filesystem can resemble a permissions problem.

  2. Inspect ownership and access on the path and its parent directories. Identify whether a previous upload or root-run deployment created files the application user cannot update.

  3. Apply the least access needed for the approved application user or group to storage and bootstrap/cache. Follow the hosting platform ownership model rather than copying broad numeric permissions from another server.

  4. Run deployment cache commands as the intended application account. Recreate a damaged generated cache only after confirming the underlying ownership is correct.

  5. Test a web request and a queue or scheduled task separately. Keep application code and private configuration outside writable public upload paths.

Confirm the expected result

Confirm a new log entry and compiled view can be written without errors. Check that unrelated users and visitors cannot read secrets or write executable project files.

If the problem continues

If the error returns after each deployment, fix the deployment account or artifact ownership. Repeatedly changing permissions treats the symptom while leaving the release process inconsistent.

A common question

Is making the whole project world-writable a good fix?

No. It grants far more access than the application needs and can make an unrelated compromise more damaging. Resolve the specific owner, group, storage path or quota problem instead.
