Understand a .uk registrar move and its IPS tag requirement

domains-dns

A registrar move for a domain in the UK namespace commonly uses the receiving registrar's tag, often called an IPS tag. Obtain the exact tag from the receiving provider for your order. Do not substitute a nameserver hostname or assume a generic-domain authorisation-code workflow applies.

01 Prepare the receiving account

  1. Confirm that the receiving provider accepts the exact extension and domain.
  2. Create the required customer account or transfer order before releasing the name if that provider requires it.
  3. Obtain the receiving tag in writing through its official account or support channel.
  4. Verify the current registered holder and contact access. A registrar change is separate from a change of domain holder.
  5. Check that existing DNS and hosting remain active through the move.

02 Request the registrar change

Use the current registrar's tag-change or release workflow, supplying the exact receiving tag. If the provider cannot complete the move, Nominet's official Online Services offers a registrar-change route for authorised holders. Review the current fee and requirements there rather than assuming that every route is free.

A receiving registrar can require a handshake before accepting the name. Track the request and ask the receiving provider to check a pending acceptance instead of changing the tag repeatedly. Verify completion in the official registry lookup and the receiving customer account.

Does a tag change renew the domain or move the website?

Do not infer either result from the tag change. Confirm the actual renewal charge and expiry separately, and preserve the DNS and hosting arrangements you intend to keep. A domain appearing in a new account is not proof that the website files or mailboxes were migrated.

How does this relate to the Domain Nexus API?

The supported release operation requires the new_tag supplied for the destination. Use it only for an owned domain and a provider-supported release workflow. It is not an instruction to invent a Nabtech tag or reuse another registrar's value. Reseller integrations should validate the destination with the customer and track the operation result before reporting success.
