Preparing fast and accessible images for a website builder

development

Prepare images for their purpose before uploading them to a website builder. A useful image should load efficiently, fit the layout and remain understandable to visitors who cannot see it.

01 Prepare and check an image

  1. Confirm that you own the image or have permission to use it on the website. Retain any licence and attribution requirements with the project records.
  2. Crop the original to the intended composition. Export a copy sized for its displayed role instead of uploading a camera original for a small card or logo.
  3. Choose a format supported by the builder and appropriate for the image. Compare the exported file's size and visible quality before replacing the original.
  4. Upload the prepared copy and set a meaningful alternative text description when the image conveys information. Use an empty alternative where the builder supports it for a purely decorative image.
  5. For a linked image or image button, describe its purpose. Put essential instructions, prices and contact details in readable page text as well.
  6. Check desktop and mobile views for distortion, cropping and layout movement. Preserve the intended proportions rather than forcing unrelated width and height values.
  7. Publish and review the page on a slower connection. Use supported loading optimisation without delaying an important image visible at the top of the page unnecessarily.

Common questions

Should alternative text contain lots of keywords?

Describe the information or function the image contributes. Keyword lists are unhelpful to someone relying on that description.

Can every image use the same export size?

A small logo, a product detail and a wide banner serve different purposes. Choose dimensions for the actual layout and retain an original for future editing.

What if compression makes text in an image blurry?

Use actual page text where possible. If a diagram must remain an image, provide a readable equivalent and check the exported result at its displayed size.
