Keeping a domain registered through renewal and expiry

A domain registration is time limited. Keeping your hosting invoice paid does not automatically prove the domain has renewed, and an expired domain can interrupt both the website and email even when their servers remain healthy. Track the registration separately from the services using it.

01 Maintain an accurate renewal record

  1. Open the domain in your account and check its registrar, displayed expiry date, renewal setting and billing contact.
  2. Confirm the contact email remains accessible independently of that domain where practical. A renewal warning sent only to a failing mailbox may be missed.
  3. Review the renewal invoice and available payment method before the due date. Automatic renewal requires the necessary billing conditions to succeed.
  4. After payment, confirm the domain service shows the expected renewed period. Allow for processing and raise a query if an invoice is paid but the registry expiry has not updated as expected.
  5. Keep important organisation domains in an inventory with an owner and a backup contact. Review it after staff changes and account transfers.

02 If a domain has expired

Check its current status promptly and ask about the recovery options for that exact extension. A normal renewal, a redemption restoration and a new registration after deletion are different processes, with different availability and possible fees. Grace periods are not universal and should not be used as the planned renewal date.

For many generic extensions, registry stages can include an auto-renew grace period, redemption and pending deletion. Country-code extensions follow their own registry rules. Do not assume that a timetable from a .com article applies to .ng, .co.uk or another extension.

Common question: should I transfer an expiring domain?

A transfer is not an emergency renewal strategy. Eligibility, locks, authorisation and completion time can affect it. Confirm the domain's position with the current and receiving registrar, and preserve service continuity before starting.

03 Verify service recovery

After a successful renewal or restoration, check registration status, nameserver delegation, website access and email delivery. DNS caches may need time to refresh, but a registration receipt does not fix unrelated hosting or DNS configuration problems.
