Restoring selected website files from a Plesk backup

plesk, backups

Selective file restoration can recover a deleted or damaged website file without replacing the whole subscription. It still overwrites the selected current objects with an older version, so preserve the current state and choose the recovery point carefully.

Prepare for the change

Identify the exact missing or damaged paths and the last known good time. Make a separate current backup before restoration. Check whether the application requires matching database and file versions, and pause conflicting deployments or writes where necessary.

01 Restore selected website files from a Plesk backup

  1. Open the subscription Backup Manager and select the backup containing the required file content. Review its date, completion status and scope.
  2. Choose selected-object restoration and the files-and-directories object type available in the restore wizard. Locate only the intended paths.
  3. Review the selected object list carefully. Avoid selecting the entire site when one directory or file is sufficient. Keep required incremental backup chain files available.
  4. Enter the correct protection password if requested and review overwrite behaviour. Start the restoration once, then monitor completion and read warnings.
  5. Compare the restored files with the intended version. Check ownership, permissions and application compatibility before reopening any paused workflow.

How do I validate the restored website files?

Test the affected page or function, a representative asset and any dependent application operation. Confirm unrelated content created after the backup remains present. Record the recovery point and selected paths for future incident review.

If the change does not work

If the backup lacks content, a configuration-only archive cannot supply the missing file. If restored code conflicts with the current database schema, recover through the application supported version plan rather than repeatedly restoring random files. For an unsuccessful result, use the preserved current copy to reverse the file replacement. Selective restore does not merge application data or undo every side effect of the original incident.
