Creating an isolated virtual server in Virtualmin

control-panels, servers

Create a top-level Virtualmin virtual server when a website needs its own hosting owner and Unix account. This gives a clearer ownership boundary than placing unrelated customers under one shared parent account.

Check access and requirements

Confirm domain ownership, the available account plan and supported runtimes. Decide whether Virtualmin will provide web, database, DNS and mail services for this domain. Have correct public DNS or a private testing method ready before expecting certificate issuance.

01 Create an isolated virtual server in Virtualmin

  1. Choose Create Virtual Server and select a new top-level virtual server. Enter the domain, description and a unique owner credential through the secure form.
  2. Select the appropriate account plan and server template. Review storage, bandwidth and feature allowances rather than assuming the defaults match the customer service.
  3. Under enabled features choose only the services required. If authoritative DNS or mail is external, account for that design instead of creating conflicting local routing casually.
  4. Review the assigned address and Unix account details, then create the server. Read the full creation result and resolve failed feature steps before continuing.
  5. Select the new domain in the navigation dropdown. Upload a harmless test page to its configured document root and choose a supported PHP version if needed.
  6. Publish the intended DNS records and request a valid HTTPS certificate after validation is possible. Configure application data, backups and any limited additional users through the domain context.

Is a Virtualmin virtual server a VPS?

No. In this interface it is a managed hosting account and its services on the existing machine. It does not create a separate guest operating system or virtual hardware.

Confirm the expected result

Confirm the domain serves the correct content and has the intended owner, permissions and limits. Test a database-backed operation where relevant. Check that another unrelated domain owner cannot access its private files and that the virtual server appears in the backup selection.

Resolve setup problems

If creation partly fails, inspect the specific component error and existing resources before retrying. A DNS or certificate failure does not necessarily mean the Unix account or website was not created. Correct the relevant feature without deleting populated data as a first response.
