Return a published post to draft when it needs to leave normal public view while you revise it. This changes its publication state; it does not erase copies already cached, indexed, emailed or saved by other people.
IN THIS ARTICLE
What happens to visitors when a published post becomes a draft?
Record the post URL and where it is linked from. Visitors following an old link may no longer reach the article while it is a draft. If the post only needs a small correction, updating the existing published content may be less disruptive than removing access during editing.
For confidential material accidentally published, changing status is only one part of the response. Review exposed files, caches and external distribution separately, and escalate promptly if private information was involved.
01 Change the status
- Open the exact post in WordPress and preserve any content you may need to compare later.
- Use the available Switch to draft control or change the status through the supported post-editing interface.
- Confirm the action and save as required. Check the post list to verify that its status is Draft.
- Review navigation, homepage sections and other links that may now point to unavailable content.
02 Verify the public result
Open the URL in a signed-out browser. An administrator can sometimes preview material that ordinary visitors cannot see, so an authenticated check is insufficient. Purge the relevant page cache if the old public response remains available.
Check attached media separately. A file uploaded to the Media Library may still be accessible at its direct URL even when the containing post becomes a draft. Do not use draft status as a file-protection mechanism.
03 Publish the revised version
Complete the review, check the slug and publication settings, then publish the same post again when appropriate. Confirm the public URL and restore any intentionally removed navigation links.
If the post is being permanently replaced, plan a meaningful redirect and update internal links rather than keeping it as an unexplained inaccessible draft indefinitely. If it belongs to a workflow with editor approval, return it through that workflow so the status change does not bypass review.
