Checking a WordPress backup before relying on it

wordpress, backups

A usable backup is one you can restore and verify, not simply a file marked successful. Check that it contains the correct website and matching database, then perform a recovery rehearsal away from the live site before relying on it for an update or migration.

01 Inspect the backup set

  • Confirm the website, creation time and timezone, and whether the backup includes files, database or both.
  • Check file sizes against previous successful backups and investigate an unexpectedly small archive.
  • Open the archive listing and confirm uploads, active theme, plugins and configuration are represented.
  • Check that the database export contains the expected table prefix and recent content.
  • Verify access to any password or encryption key needed for recovery without storing it publicly beside the backup.

02 Rehearse a restore

  1. Create an isolated destination that cannot send real customer emails or process live payments and jobs.
  2. Restore the matching files and database using the documented recovery method.
  3. Adjust the test address through a serialisation-aware method where necessary and configure access protection.
  4. Sign in, view representative content and check uploaded media, forms and important plugin settings.
  5. Compare a recent known record with the source and record the time taken to complete recovery.

Why can a successful backup still be incomplete?

The job may exclude large folders, time out on an export, rely on remote media that was not copied, or capture files and database at incompatible moments. Some backup tools create incremental sets that require earlier files. Read the restore requirements rather than assuming that the newest archive stands alone.

Should I restore onto the live site to test it?

No. A test restore can overwrite current content, registrations and transactions. Use staging or a separate installation and keep its business integrations isolated. A backup from before a security incident also needs examination before restoring potentially compromised plugins or accounts.

03 Record a practical recovery plan

Keep the tested backup location, restore procedure, required access and verification checklist available to the people responsible for the site. Record how much recent data would be lost if that backup were used. Repeat the rehearsal after major architecture changes, such as media offloading or a new commerce data store. Remove the test copy securely when it is no longer needed and retain backups according to your agreed privacy and retention policy.
