Creating reusable synced patterns

wordpress

A synced pattern keeps a reusable content section connected wherever it is inserted. Use it for information that should remain identical, such as an approved contact notice or a standard call to action, and review its wider impact before changing it.

01 Choose content that should stay shared

Separate truly shared wording from page-specific facts. A business-hours panel may suit synchronisation; a service card with different prices and descriptions usually needs independent content or a deliberately configured variation. Site structure such as a global header is normally better handled as a template part.

02 Create and insert the pattern

  1. Build and review the section on a draft page. Select the relevant blocks, including any container needed for its layout.
  2. Open the block options and choose Create pattern. Enter a recognisable name and enable the synced option.
  3. Save the pattern, then insert it from the pattern area of the block inserter on another draft page.
  4. Preview both uses and confirm that the shared wording, links and layout make sense in each context.

Which pages change when I edit a synced pattern?

Before editing the shared original, identify representative pages that use it and record the current wording if a rollback may be needed. Review the saving confirmation so you know that a pattern, and potentially more than the current page, is being updated.

For a one-page exception, detach that occurrence before making local edits. Do not change the original and then try to repair every other page manually. A detached copy no longer receives future shared updates, which should be part of the editorial decision.

03 Verify and maintain

After a shared update, check several public pages, including one with a different template or background. A common section can inherit surrounding styles differently. Test its links and remove outdated campaign details when the offer ends.

Deleting a synced pattern from the pattern library can affect existing uses. Removing one occurrence from a page is a different action. If an editor reports a missing pattern, check whether the original was deleted before rebuilding the section as unrelated blocks across the site.
