Grouping blocks to control spacing and backgrounds

wordpress

A Group block lets several blocks behave as one section for layout, background and spacing. It is useful for a service card, a notice or a content section that should move together without styling every paragraph individually.

01 Choose the container deliberately

A standard Group arranges blocks as a section, while related Row or Stack layouts can organise items horizontally or vertically. The options shown depend on the theme and selected variation. Choose the structure that matches the reading order rather than nesting containers simply to imitate a screenshot.

02 Create and style the group

  1. Select the blocks that belong together, using List View if their boundaries are difficult to see.
  2. Use the Group action, or insert a Group first and place the intended blocks inside it.
  3. Select the outer Group and apply a background colour or supported border settings where useful.
  4. Set padding for space between the container edge and its contents. Use block spacing or gap for space between the children, and margins for space outside the section.
  5. Review width and alignment settings against the surrounding page, then save and preview.

How can I keep nested Groups easy to maintain?

Give important groups a useful internal name where supported. A List View filled with indistinguishable nested Groups is harder to maintain. Before adding another wrapper, check whether the existing parent already offers the spacing control you need.

Use a consistent spacing scale rather than unrelated values on every child. If the section has a coloured background, verify that headings, links and buttons still have sufficient contrast. A background change on the parent can expose inherited text colours that looked fine elsewhere.

03 Verify and correct

Preview at a narrow width and check that padding does not leave the text in an excessively small column. If a child block seems unaffected by a background change, confirm it actually sits inside the group and does not have its own opaque background.

Ungroup removes the wrapper while retaining its children, but the wrapper's layout and visual styling will no longer apply. Review the result before saving. Deleting the Group is different and can remove the whole section, so check the selected action carefully.
