Renaming a mailbox address in DirectAdmin

control-panels, email

Renaming a mailbox changes the address and login identity people use to reach it. Plan the transition so messages sent to the old address and applications using it are handled intentionally.

What you need before you begin

Confirm the old and new full addresses and back up important mail. Review contact forms, devices, signatures and external account recovery records using the old address. Check whether a forwarder, mailbox or other object already uses the new name.

01 Rename a mailbox address in DirectAdmin

  1. Open E-mail Manager > E-mail Accounts in the correct domain.
  2. Use the account action menu and choose the username/password modification option exposed by your DirectAdmin version.
  3. Change the mailbox username to the intended new local part. Avoid changing its password accidentally during the same operation unless a rotation is planned.
  4. Save and inspect the resulting mailbox. Update mail clients and SMTP applications to use the new full username and sender address.
  5. If the old address must remain reachable, create a deliberate forwarding or alias arrangement supported by the service after confirming there is no naming conflict. Notify correspondents and update published contact information.

02 Example: keep an old contact address reachable

If [email protected] becomes [email protected], first verify that the renamed mailbox still contains its existing folders and that a fresh login uses the new full address. Update authorized mail clients and website SMTP settings.

If customers must still reach [email protected], configure the supported old-to-new forwarding arrangement after the rename frees the old name. Send separate external tests to each address and confirm both arrive in the intended mailbox. Send a reply and check that its From and Reply-To values match your published contact details. Do not create a reverse forward from the new address back to the old one.

How do I test the renamed mailbox address?

Sign in under the new identity and check the expected folders and messages. Test external delivery to the new address and, if retained, the old address. Send a message and verify its From and reply behavior.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

If the interface does not offer a supported rename or the destination conflicts, ask support about a controlled mailbox migration instead of deleting and recreating it blindly. Do not assume a rename automatically updates third-party recovery accounts or provides permanent forwarding from the old address.
