Manage test accounts and credentials for billing integrations

web-hosting, account-help

Give each billing integration a controlled test environment and credentials appropriate to its purpose. A copied production database can contain working gateway, registrar and server credentials, so cloning the application does not by itself create a safe test system.

01 Set up the test identity

  1. List the integration's external actions: payments, refunds, domain orders, provisioning, email and background tasks. Identify which providers offer a sandbox or restricted test account.
  2. Create a separate test account or API credential where supported. Grant only the methods and resources required for the test, and apply an IP restriction or expiry when available.
  3. Store credentials in the approved secret store or supported encrypted application settings. Keep passwords and API keys out of source code, tickets and sample exports.
  4. Before starting a cloned billing system, remove or replace production credentials and disable live automation. Restrict outbound access where appropriate for the test design.
  5. Use controlled test customer data and designated recipients. Verify that callbacks and webhook endpoints point to the intended test installation.
  6. Run one small end-to-end test and inspect both the billing platform and provider result. Confirm that no production resource, charge or customer message was created.
  7. Record the credential owner, purpose, environment and review date. Revoke temporary access after the test and rotate a credential if it was exposed.

02 Check the platform defaults

WHMCS API credentials use API roles to define allowed actions. HostBill API access also provides method and IP controls; its documented new-key defaults require review because unrestricted methods or addresses can grant more access than a single integration needs.

If a provider has no sandbox, design the test around approved test resources and clearly understood costs. A dry-run label in your own application does not prevent external writes unless the integration actually enforces it.

Common questions

Can the test system use the production API key temporarily?

Prefer a separate restricted identity. Reusing a powerful production key makes accidental calls harder to contain and prevents clean revocation when the test ends.

Is disabling customer emails enough to isolate a billing clone?

No. Cron, payment capture, registrar renewals, provisioning jobs and webhooks can still act on external systems. Review each integration and scheduled process separately.
