Completing Virtualmin post-install configuration

control-panels, servers

Complete Virtualmin initial configuration according to the services this server will actually provide. The post-install wizard helps select operating choices, but a successful installation still needs DNS, access, backup and application checks before production use.

What you need before you begin

Have the server hostname, administrative email, intended DNS and mail design, and database requirements ready. Confirm whether you installed a full or minimal bundle and how much memory is available. Keep access to the console and current installation logs.

01 Complete Virtualmin post-install configuration

  1. Log in to the trusted HTTPS panel address and run the post-installation wizard. Read each explanation rather than accepting settings for services you do not intend to operate.
  2. Choose memory and background-service options that fit the machine. If mail scanning is offered, consider the actual mail workload and available RAM; disabling a required service purely to hide capacity problems is not a complete design.
  3. Review database choices and protect any administrative credentials the setup requires. Do not publish a database listener simply because the website needs local SQL access.
  4. Confirm the DNS design. Names entered as nameservers must actually serve zones and have correct delegation when used publicly; external authoritative DNS requires its own record management.
  5. Finish the wizard and run Check Configuration from the virtual-server list or System Settings. Resolve reported service, permission, quota or address problems before creating customer accounts.
  6. Review the default account plan and server template, then create a disposable test domain. Configure notifications, automatic update policy and a tested off-server backup schedule.

Does completing the wizard make DNS public?

No. Registrar delegation and authoritative DNS records must point to a functioning DNS service. Local configuration alone does not change the domain registry or an external DNS provider.

Confirm the expected result

Test the panel hostname certificate, a website, database access and mail only if local mail is part of the design. Confirm the system has adequate memory and free storage during the test. Re-run the configuration check after resolving issues.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

If the check fails, use its exact message to identify the affected component. Missing packages in a minimal installation can be intentional; enable a feature only after installing and configuring its dependencies. Do not repeatedly change unrelated wizard options to clear a service-specific error.
