Use WHMCS product groups to organise the catalogue around customer needs, such as shared hosting, reseller hosting or software modules. A clear group structure also helps administrators apply appropriate order templates and payment methods.

01 Create a product group
- Open System Settings and Products/Services, then choose Create a New Group.
- Enter a name customers will understand and a stable friendly URL. Add a headline and tagline that explain the group without promising features absent from its products.
- Select the order form template if this group needs a different product-comparison layout from the system default.
- Choose the available payment gateways. Ensure this group shares at least one usable gateway with other groups that customers may combine in one cart.
- Save the group, then add any shared Group Features supported by its template. Only describe features included across the products shown.
- Arrange the group order and add or edit its products. Open the public group link to check the result.
02 Test the complete shopping journey
Place one item from this group and one from another group into a test cart. WHMCS only offers payment methods common to the relevant groups, so independently valid groups can create an unpayable mixed cart when their gateway selections do not overlap.
Check product names, billing cycles and tax displays on mobile and desktop. Make the difference between a one-time setup fee and a recurring charge visible before checkout. Use comparison features that help a customer choose, such as account limits or supported software, instead of repeating general marketing claims.
03 Example: separate hosting products from software modules
Your WHMCS catalogue contains hosting subscriptions and software modules purchased by other hosting companies. Create understandable groups rather than mixing every product into one list.
- Open System Settings > Products/Services > Create a New Group.
- Create a customer-facing
Web Hostinggroup with a suitable headline and stable friendly URL. - Create a separate
Hosting Modulesgroup for the relevant software products. - Select the intended order templates and ensure the groups share a usable payment gateway for mixed orders.
- Open both public group pages and place one product from each into a test cart.
Expected result: visitors find the right type of product and can complete a mixed checkout. Existing products can be reorganised without recreating their service records.
What should I preserve when reorganising product groups?
The group order determines which group appears first in the client-area catalogue. Review that choice after adding seasonal or specialist products. A hidden group can still be reached through a direct link, so hiding is a presentation control rather than an access restriction.
Keep existing product records intact when reorganising the catalogue. Review published website links and promotional links after changing friendly URLs, and maintain a simple mapping from each marketed plan to its WHMCS product and delivery package.
