Choose WHMCS default registrars and domain automation

whmcs, domains-dns

Configure a WHMCS registrar connection and its domain defaults before enabling automatic orders. The registrar module handles registration operations, while nameserver defaults describe where a new domain should be delegated.

01 Activate the registrar

  1. Open System Settings and Domain Registrars. Find the intended module and choose Activate.
  2. Enter the provider's required API credentials and account settings. Use the module's documented test environment where available.
  3. Complete any provider-side source-IP allowlist or account activation requirement.
  4. Save and perform the supported connection or test operation. Confirm the actual registrar account and available balance before enabling chargeable actions.
  5. In Domain Pricing, assign the registrar to the intended extensions and review automatic-registration behavior.

02 Set useful nameserver defaults

Open General Settings and Domains, then enter the approved Default Nameserver values. Confirm that these are real, operational authoritative nameservers for the intended service. Do not copy examples or assume that a billing setting creates DNS zones.

Customers can change the default values during the domain order. Review combined hosting-and-domain orders to confirm that the resulting delegation matches the server or DNS service that will host their records.

How should I test a registrar before accepting public orders?

Test registration and transfer forms for representative extensions, including required contact or authorisation fields. Check the provider's supported features and any extension restrictions. A registrar working for one extension does not establish support for every extension listed in WHMCS.

Verify which operations occur after payment and which need staff review. Keep test credentials out of the live configuration and live credentials out of an unrestricted staging copy.

03 Maintain the connection

Record the account owner, credential rotation process, allowlisted IP and provider escalation route. After a WHMCS server migration, update the relevant source-IP permission and verify domain synchronisation. When changing the default registrar for new orders, remember that existing domains remain at their current registrar until a separate authorised transfer occurs.
